"MATH IN FINE ART"
MATH IN FINE ARTS
Math and art share a long historical relationship. Math has influenced art with tools such as linear perspective, analysis of symmetry and mathematical objects. Math gives dimension to figures/objects. Artists use mathematical concepts for painting, designing, video production and printmaking.
OUR RESEARCH
- We were inspired by our dance teacher and found out how maths is related to dance.
- Our art teacher told us about three - dimensional views by sketching. So,we made a one point perspective drawing.
MATH IN DANCE
ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE DRAWING
‘…a mathematical system for representing three-dimensional objects and space on a two-dimensional surface by means of intersecting lines that are drawn vertically and horizontally and that radiate from one point on a horizon line…’
One point perspective is a drawing method that shows how things appear to get smaller as they get further away, converging towards a single ‘vanishing point’ on the horizon line. It is a way of drawing objects upon a flat piece of paper (or other drawing surface) so that they look three-dimensional and realistic.

OUR EXPERIENCE
We did this activity as a part of the ‘EUMIND’ project. We learnt how to make a 3d one- point perspective drawing and it was real fun. Through this activity, we were able to make a connection between mathematics and fine arts. It was a learning experience and we enjoyed doing it.
INTERVIEWS
CONCLUSION
Dance is also a beneficial medium to teach basic geometric shapes to young children because dance is an engaging art curriculum that can be used in schools to learn math.
One point perspective is a drawing method with which one can draw objects upon a flat piece of paper so that they look three-dimensional and realistic. We sketched bird’s eye view of skyscrapers

COMPARISON
Only PiuX college 1st group worked on the topic mathematics in fine arts. Both the groups approached the topic in a different way and mentioned different kinds of aspects considering the subject.
Similarities
1. The aspect of Maths in 3 dimensional drawings although it was sketched in different ways.
2. Interview with an artist to see how people apply maths in other walks of life.
Differences
1. We have uploaded a video to explore the mathematical concepts while The Piux have nice images.
2. We related fine arts with one of Indian Classical dance forms “Bharattnatyam “ to use the aesthetic elements while learning the basic geometric shapes while Piux college used maths to create fine arts.

REFLECTION
The analysis of both visual and performing arts are done by the partner school Piux College and us respectively shows that there is interplay of mathematical concepts. We found that the model of research used by both schools is similar. It was an engaging experience for us.
